1 John 5:13       NIV

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

1 John 5:13       CJB

13 I have written you these things so that you may know that you have eternal life — you who keep trusting in the person and power of the Son of God.

The above verse comes as John begins to conclude this letter (it goes on another eight verses). It is amazing how similar it is to the closing verse of his gospel in John 20:31. But these are written that you may believe] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. NIV  But these which have been recorded are here so that you may trust that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by this trust you may have life because of who He is. CJB

But now, let us take a look at 1 John 5:13 and ask what are these things John is referring to that he has written to us about? It must be about the things contained in the earlier parts of this chapter summarized in the prior two verses (11-12), And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. And the life spoken of here is eternal life as in verse 13.

John desperately wants us to know, as believers, that we have eternal life and states so plainly. A bit of history tells us there was much going on where non-believers were trying to convince believers to no longer believe. John sought to give us to have the assurance of eternal life so that we would continue to believe. This is a warning of sorts even for us today that people will try to drive us away from our faith. But we can turn to this wonderful assurance and continue to believe. Thus, the value of hearing the gospel of Jesus over and over so as to plant it firmly in our hearts and minds.

John has no doubts, and his belief radiates a faith from his core. Why? Because he knows his salvation is from Jesus on the cross, just as our salvation is. What Jesus dis on the cross is what saves us and promises us eternal life. That and nothing else. And that reminds me of an equation we should all be familiar with, Jesus + nothing = Everything. So, let us persevere in believing while we look forward to eternal life with Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for all the assurances John provides for those of us who believe. I so look forward to our next life with You, Your Son, and the Holy Spirit. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
